چکیده

An important issue in multiprogrammed multiprocessor systems is the scheduling of parallel jobs. Consequently, there has been a considerable amount of analytic research in this area recently. A frequent criticism, however, is that proposed disciplines that are studied analytically are rarely ever implemented and even more rarely incorporated into commercial scheduling software. In this paper, we seek to bridge this gap by describing how at least one commercial scheduling system, namely Platform Computing's Load Sharing Facility, can be extended to support a wide variety of new scheduling disciplines. We then describe the design and implementation of a number of mul-tiprocessor scheduling disciplines, each diiering considerably in terms of the type of preemption that is assumed to be available and in terms of the exibility allowed in allocating processors. In evaluating the performance of these disciplines, we nd that preemption can signiicantly reduce overall response times, but that the performance of disciplines that must commit to allocations when a job is rst activated can be signiicantly aaected by transient loads.

Multiprocessor Scheduling for High-Variability Service Time Distributions

Many disciplines have been proposed for scheduling and processor allocation in multiprogrammed multiprocessors for parallel processing. These have been, for the most part, designed and evaluated for workloads having relatively low variability in service demand. But with reports that variability in service demands at high performance computing centers can actually be quite high, these discipline...

Pre-scheduling and Scheduling of Task Graph on Homogeneous Multiprocessor Systems

Task graph scheduling is a multi-objective optimization and NP-hard problem. In this paper a new algorithm on homogeneous multiprocessors systems is proposed. Basically, scheduling algorithms are targeted to balance the two parameters of time and energy consumption. These two parameters are up to a certain limit in contrast with each other and improvement of one causes reduction in the othe...

Scheduling of a flexible flow shop with multiprocessor task by a hybrid approach based on genetic and imperialist competitive algorithms

This paper presents a new mathematical model for a hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with multiprocessor tasks in which sequence dependent set up times and preemption are considered. The objective is to minimize the weighted sum of makespan and maximum tardiness. Three meta-heuristic methods based on genetic algorithm (GA), imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and a hybrid approach of GA a...

Run, Fatboy, Run: Applying the Reduction to Uniprocessor Algorithm to Other Wide Resources

The RUN (Reduction to UNiprocessor)[3] algorithm was first described by Regnier, et al. as a novel solution to real-time multiprocessor scheduling, but its ideas can be applied to other scheduling problems involving arrays of similar resources. This technical report briefly describes how RUN can improve the management of network routes, queueing disciplines, disks, and batch schedulers.
